Criminal Rat (2005) Banksy |
“The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It’s people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages” - Banksy
1. Define Post-Modernism using 8-10 bullet points that include short quotes.
>“Postmodernism partakes of uncertainty, insecurity, doubt, and accepts ambiguity.” - Witcombe
>A reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific efforts to explain reality.
>Post-Modernism goes with the fact that anything goes - relativism.
>Post-modernism is open, unbounded, and concerned the experimental process and form.
>"A dominant cultural logic of late capitalism." - Fredric Jameson
> post·mod·ern·ism/pōstˈmädərˌnizəm/
Noun: A late 20th-century style in the arts, architecture, and criticism that represents a departure from modernism.
>Postmodernism rejects the modernist ideals of rationality, virility, artistic genius, and individualism, in favor of being anti-capitalist, contemptuous of traditional morality, and committed to radical egalitarianism. - Paul V. Hartman
>Many people are confused by the term postmodern. It has become a term that is bandied about in intelligent conversation, while many people use it loosely to mean almost anything new and innovative. This article looks at the meaning of this term
Post-Modernism is related to the term "modernism". "Post" means to come after. In other words, postmodern thought is that which comes after or develops from modernistic thought. Firstly one has to understand modernism.
Modernism refers to a certain period of western cultural, artistic and sociological history.
This period covers the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Modernism is a vague and general term that refers to a period of great change in the western world. This change refers mainly to an alteration in thinking and a development of different views of reality.
2. Use a quote by Witcombe (2000) to define the Post-Modern artist.
"The post-modern artist is reflexive in that he/she is self-aware and consciously involved in a process of thinking about him/herself and society in a deconstructive manner, demasking pretensions, becoming aware of his/her cultural self in history, and accelerating the process of self-consciousness."
- Witcombe.

3. Use the grid on pages 42 and 43 to summarize the list of the features of Post-Modernity.
Post-modern art knows no boundaries.
From what I can see from the grids, Post-modernity is acceptance of the new technological resources and styles.
In contrast to Modern art, what we see in Post-modernity is a more playful and experimental process. Rather than drawing the lines for each genre of art, post modernity seems to bring all categories together.
4. Use this summary to answer the next two questions - !
5. Research Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's 'Han Dynasty Urn with Coca-Cola logo'(1994) in order to say what features of the work are Post-Modern.
An internationally renowned artist, Aei Weiwei uses many different types of vases which contain a lot of history and hold much value to the Chinese.
Weiwei strips the urn of its historical value by pasting onto it a Coca-cola logo, fusing together the past, present and future. Also the fact that he didn't design the Coca-cola logo brings in another aspect of post-modern which is recycling - bringing back the old and making it into new.
The performance piece where he shatters the urn challenges the viewers with the question of the importance of theories and ideas behind it and behind culture and links to relativism, the idea that anything goes, there are no boundaries. He explained that, "...art is a way of getting out of the system" and that, "My art works best when there is an underlying political theme". He communicates a lot of his own perspectives and emotions through his works while also trying to show us the transformation of the world of art and design by using quite a bit of advertising in his art. What stimulates art today is influenced heavily by the powerful media.
All these features in Weiwei's works come to meet the traits of Post-modern art.

6. Research British artist Banksy's street art, and analyze the following two works by the artist to discuss how each work can be defined at Post-Modern.
The fact that Banksy is a graffiti artist who works on building walls around the city supports the core of Post-Modernity - no limits.
From what I've experienced, graffiti is a form of vandalism and can land you with a pretty hefty fine but Banksy changes that, instead modifying the belief that street art is unacceptable and turns it into something art that strongly communicates ideas on the environment, politics and government.

Banksy's Caveman outside New Beverley Cinema, LA (2008) |
'Los Angeles' portrays a male neanderthal holding a tray of fast food - a reference to the popular culture and growing chains of killer fast food industries. In my opinion, Banksy is suggesting that the generation now are no different than those 350,000 years ago by his use of modern resources and historical imagery together.
It is Post-modern in the sense that he has blended together the (very) past and present, questioning whether or not our minds really have evolved that much from that of cavemen.

I like how you described Ai Wei Wei's Coca-Cola logo on the urn as "recycling". I agree that Post-Modernism "knows no boundaries", as it fuses and includes every single ideology, culture, etc into one and isn't limited to just a few, like Modernism.
